Weather/Climate
Autumn
Normally, the most comfortable season of the year is early autumn (September to early October). During that period, temperatures are reasonable throughout China (about 50-72F) with a limited amount of rain. September for example is the only month in the year when the ancient and valuable paintings of the Beijing Palace Museum are displayed due to proper climate conditions (low humidity and proper temperature).

Spring
Spring can also be delightful with the average temperatures roughly the same as in autumn (about 50-72F). The best way to deal with weather unpredictability is to wear layered clothing that will make you comfortable in both chilly and warm weather.

Summer
Summer (from June to the end of August) can be extremely hot with temperatures well above 72F, especially in the famous ‘four furnaces’ of China: Wuhan, Tianjin, Chongging, and Nanchang. Summer is also a rainy season, so travelers should not forget umbrellas, light raincoats and rubber/plastic shoes.

Winter
Winter can be incredibly cold especially in the north. Off season travel can also offer its rewards.

Transportation
Transportation in ancient China was on poor condition. People traveled mainly on foot. It took several months for a candidate who expected to take the imperial examination to be a government official to go from home to the capital on foot. People also rode horses when traveling from town to town. For short-distance trips, man-carried sedans and carriages or oxcart were also used. Needless to say, all these means of transportation are in very low speed.
Now we have trains, planes, ships, buses and bikes in China. With an aggressive effort since 1949, by the Chinese government to improve their country, a comprehensive transportation system was created. It consisted of railways, highways, airplanes. Tibet, one of most inaccessible region in the world even can be reached via train since the operation of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in first, July, 2005.

Airplane
Airplane is the most convenient and fastest means of transportation, though it is also the most expensive. Air travel can cover a long journey in less time, saving precious time and energy for you to enjoy the attractions in your destination.

Train
Traveling by train in China is one of the cheapest ways to travel some of the long distances in China and is used widely by the local population. Tourists can get to Moscow (Russia), Ulan Bator (Mongolia), Hanoi (Vietnam) and Pyongyang (North Korea) by takinginternational trains from China.
It is important to know what to expect if you decide to travel by train in China. If you choose to travel by train, China Highlights recommends booking a soft sleeper. English is generally not spoken by any of the staff on the trains or in the railway stations. Limited English sign is available in the railway stations. A separate waiting lounge is available in the railway stations for passengers traveling in the soft sleeper section. Preferential boarding is available for those passengers.

Taxi
Taking a taxi is a very fast and convenient way to get to your destination, be it a hotel, scenic spot, airport, railway station, and so on. You can find taxis in almost every city, and the fare is relatively inexpensive for western travelers. Tourists can also hire a taxi for a half or a whole day, but please make sure to first agree on a price with the driver.

Food
As China is a geographically huge country, it is diverse in climate, ethnicity and subcultures. Not surprisingly therefore, there are many distinctive styles of cuisine. Traditionally there are eight main families of dishes, namely:
* Hui (Anhui)
* Yue (Cantonese)
* Min (Fujian)
* Xiang (Hunan)
* Yang (Jiangsu)
* Lu (Shandong)
* Chuan (Szechuan)
* Zhe (Zhejiang)
Today there are mainly four main styles of food in China, namely the Beijing Style, the Shanghai Style, the Sichuan/Szechuan Style and the Cantonese Style. The Cantonese style is the most popular style in overseas restaurants. When you are traveling in China, you would find it extremely hard to resist the Peking duck, the Shanghai pork bun, or the Cantonese dim sum.

Religion
China is a country that having many kinds of religious belief, people are free in choosing their own religions and they can express their beliefs openly. According to some recent surveys, there are 100 million people who have religious beliefs and religious establishments about 85,000 with 300,000 clergymen in China nowadays. There are some major religions in China Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Catholicism, Protestantism and Islam.

China has a continental and seasonal climate. Most parts are in the temperate zone but southern areas are in the tropical or subtropical zone while northern areas are in the frigid zone. Climates in different areas are complicated. For instance, northern Heilongjiang Province has a winter climate the year round without summer, while Hainan Island has a summer climate the year round without winter. The following is a reference table for tourists to prepare clothing on their trips.

China can be visited through out the year because of the stretch of its territories nad sites and activities it can offer. Deciding when to visit China depends on which places you wish to visit, what type of weather you enjoy, and how much a bargain you want. China is a huge country with many different climates and types of landscape. Think of it in terms of the United States, which China resembles in size and shape. Traveling along the Golden Route (Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Guilin) is like visiting New York, Chicago, Santa Fe, and Jacksonville, Florida all in one trip.
April, May, September and October are the peak tourist months at China’s most popular destinations when the weather is the most comfortable.
